Since Melissa and Rory Hunter opened the resort in 2010, they have developed a close relationship and collaboration with the nearest village on the larger neighboring island of Koh Rong, where there is now a school and a medical clinic, among other things. Additionally, they have been the driving force behind establishing a protected zone in the archipelago, designed to protect coral reefs and wildlife from destructive fishing by outside commercial fishermen.
