Sanak Retreat, Munduk
Philanthropy and jungle cottages in the middle of the rice field
Sanak Retreat is one of our absolute favorite hotels in Bali. It is a truly unique experience, that reminds you of Bali of the past, and makes you believe in sustainability and authenticity in tourism.
The genuine smile and presence of the staff, the tranquility and the view of the rice fields, the local food, and the addictive Balinese coffee. The village of Munduk is far away from mass tourism.
Philanthropy that benefits both guests and hosts
Sanak is built by a French philanthropist with the vision to create jobs for the youth of the village. The owner has more or less handed over the hotel keys to the lovely Gusti, a former rice farmer from the neighboring town, who together with the manager Sebastian ensures that both guests, staff, and villagers are all impacted positively by the hotel operation. Sanak's motto is "handpicked with humanity in mind”. The words say it all.
12 wooden cottages surrounded by rice fields and mountains
Sanak Retreat is literally located in the middle of a rice field. Whether at the restaurant, the pool, or at your bungalow you are right on the edge of the rice paddies, and the green color is just powerful. The “green carpet” continues down through the valley like a painting.
In the background, you have three of Bali's highest mountains, where the peaks are often seen above the cloudy mists of the horizon
This perfect setting is underlined by Sanak's simply beautiful design that fits perfectly into the surroundings. Less is more at Sanak Retreat.
Ideal for families that want to reconnect
Sanak is as far from a classic family hotel as one can possibly get. Still, it is a perfect stop on a Bali roundtrip for both couples and families. Children are welcome at Sanak, and they have bungalows in different sizes for families.
There is even a villa with 3 bedrooms and its own private pool ideal for the three-generation family tour. At Sanak it is possible to create a stay that combines authentic experiences with relaxation.
The deep blue infinity pool stands in stark contrast to the green rice fields.
A recommended excursion is the hike through rice fields and small village communities to the local waterfall. Late afternoons the staff helps the children in setting up the colorful trademark kites. Sanak is well integrated with the village, which you will see when the girls from the village dance school come by and perform.
It feels real - and it is real. Bali as it should be.
